REGIONAL NEWS

Two members of the Deep South Region participated in the USEA Area III Championships held in Paradise Farm in Aiken, South Carolina the weekend of November 15-16, and they both represented us superbly.  Sarah Reese of Gulf Coast Gallopers Pony Club, riding Jasmin de Tanues, rode in the Novice Championships and finished First among the Young Riders and Fourth overall.  Sarah's excellent dressage score of 27.5 put her in a three place tie for first after dressage in the extremely competitive division.  Her clean cross country and closest to optimum time gave her first place alone after the second phase, but tragically a rail dropped during stadium, moving her to finish Fourth, with an outstanding final score of 31.5
Emily Robertson competed in the Training Championships division.  The cross country course was extremely difficult, and few competitors went clean.  Emily's single stop on cross country  was enough to put her in the ribbons, and she finished in Sixth Place.
Both girls are in their first year of college, which makes their accomplishment even more outstanding!  Congratulations to each of them.

On the brisk, crisp, dry and clear  weekend of January 20-21, 2001, approximately 30 Pony Clubbers from Southern Breeze, Gulf Coast Gallopers, Mobile Bay, and Emerald Coast participated in a weekend Fox Hunt prep at Happy Valley Farm. The weekend was organized by Susan Reeder of Southern Breeze, who did a wonderful job.

The training was provided by Sue Skipper and Kenon Garcia of the Chula Homa Hunt Club on Saturday and Pierre and Rebecca Billard of the Whitworth Hunt Club on Sunday. Before lunch on Saturday the unmounted portion of the clinic was held, including the distribution of hand-outs and videos of actual fox hunts. After lunch, the Pony Clubbers mounted for a lesson on riding in a group in the open. The highlight of the afternoon was a trail ride with Anne Chandler on Odessa. She showed riders places in Happy Valley they'd never seen before! The Pony Clubbers really loved riding with Anne.

On Sunday, the Billards were dressed in proper hunt attire and demonstrated tack, apparel, and equipment used in actual hunts. The Pony Clubbers participated in 2 actual mock hunts on horseback, directed and instructed by Pierre (master of the foxhounds) and Rebecca. Katrina Davis was the fox; Sarah Beth Stronsky, Karly Skjoldager, Sarah Reese, Anna Harris, Katie White, and Christian Papale were the hounds; Amanda Zellner and Amy Tillson were the whippers-in, and Julie Sullivan was the field master. The rain subsided by 7 p.m. Friday, so the weekend weather was brisk, crisp, dry and clear. The Region was invited to hunts by both Whitworth and Chula Homa. Everyone had a fabulous time are looking forward to attending a real fox hunt.

Even I was a participate. I was the deer that sprain out of the woods ever so gracefully and darted across the path of the hounds. (horns and all)
